Increasing nutrient influx trends and remediation options at Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa: a mass-balance approach

چکیده

The Hartbeespoort Dam, located 40 km west of Tshwane on the Crocodile River, is an extremely eutrophic water body. Situated in one most economically active areas South Africa, it receives a high nutrient input from wastewater treatment works (WWTW), leaking sewers, as well urban and agricultural runoff. Metsi Me programme, which ran 2006 to 2016, aimed mitigate in-lake stocks using biomanipulation, including physical removal Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) Microcystis aeruginosa (blue-green algae). Using Department Water Sanitation quality flow data, annual influxes outfluxes total nitrogen (TN) phosphorus (TP) Dam were calculated. Through literature review comparison with previous studies, relative importance biomass harvesting relation retained nutrients was assessed. average influx rivers during hydrological years 2010/11 2016/17 582 t∙a−1 TP 4 687 TN, trends for both TN being significantly positive over this period. increased by 77.8 every year 456 t∙a−1, reversing long-term negative trend. Average dam retention + (calculated difference between river inputs outputs, i.e., sedimentation, denitrification losses) 358 t P 2 195 N. A best estimation hyacinth algal 2.1 11.5 N, 3.9 respectively. An estimated 341 674–1 288 N sedimented. Denitrification losses are poorly quantified but possibly comparable sedimentation. River 28.4 110 smaller rates than influxes, suggesting increasing per annum. Upgrading WWTWs catchment refurbishing overflowing sewers appropriate solution.

Application of chemical mass balance approach to determine nutrient loading

The River Kali in western Uttar Pradesh, India is a typical water course for untreated municipal and industrial effluents. The river receives considerable amounts of waste every day from the industries and municipal area of Muzaffarnagar town. Agricultural runoff is the other major factor in pollution of the river water. The mass balance calculations conducted on the river reach indicate that n...

Radio-epidemiological evaluation and remediation in water sources from two mines in South Africa

Background: In this study, the health risk associated with three types of drinking waters (fissure, underground treated and surrounding waters) from two mines in South Africa were assessed. Materials and Methods: The measurement of the radionuclides concentration was carried out by liquid scintillation counter and alpha spectrometer. The estimated radiological risk pose to the people consuming ...

Determination of nutrient mass balance in turkeys.

Retention and excretion of phosphorus and nitrogen were determined for turkeys fed 2 diets at 3 ages, via mass balance based on the nutrient content of consumed feed, carcasses, and litter. The 2 diets consisted of an industry diet (IND) and a low phosphorus + 600 U of phytase/kg (LP) diet. A subsample of birds was weighed and killed at 12, 15, and 18 wk of age for nutrient retention (via whole...

Geochemistry of mineral licks at Loskop Dam Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Although numerous hypotheses have been proposed to explain geophagy, the primary driver of this behaviour remains elusive. Supplementation of scarce nutrients is one commonly cited explanation. We examined the element concentration of three licks relative to adjacent topsoils to infer the possible reasons for geophagy at Loskop Dam Nature Reserve. Lick samples had greater concentrations of B, C...
